About

Kevin McGrath as Pandarus in Troilus and Cressida

I came late to the party. But I’m here to stay.

My name is Kevin. I’m a classically trained actor, a Shakespeare enthusiast, and a lifelong learner who discovered — later than most — that Shakespeare’s words could change everything.

It started in high school. I was failing English. A patient teacher offered me one last chance: attend a screening of Othello starring Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith, and Judi Dench, and write a report. I went. And something happened that I didn’t expect. I understood it. The jealousy, the pride, the love, the betrayal — these were human emotions I recognized at seventeen. I was flooded with excitement I hadn’t anticipated. I aced the next test. Highest grade in three classes.

I never forgot that feeling.

After high school, military service, and junior college, life took me in other directions. But Shakespeare stayed with me. I attended film festivals, Renaissance Faires, and performances whenever I could. When I retired in 2014, I made a decision: if I was going to perform Shakespeare, I was going to train properly.

I studied at Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Massachusetts. I trained at The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum. I joined The Long Beach Shakespeare Company, where I have played Julius Caesar, Falstaff, Titus Andronicus, Peter Quince, King Duncan, and more.

I created this blog because I kept meeting people who felt Shakespeare wasn’t for them. Students. Retirees. Curious souls who’d never been given the right invitation.

Consider this yours.

I’m not a scholar or a professor. I’m an actor, a fan, and an enthusiast who believes Shakespeare still has a great deal to say to us — right now, in this world, in this moment.

Beginners, serious fans, actors, curious people — all are welcome.

It started with Shakespeare. Let’s find out where it goes from here.
